Pain Management and Alleviation

Pearl Werfel PhD Pain Management Lake

Initially, you may be drawn to look at the jagged peaks… that bring to mind pain. But, as you continue to gaze, the peaks can begin to fade into the background and you become more aware of the comfort and calm of the water.

Living with physical discomfort can affect every aspect of your life. Psychological factors such as mood, beliefs about pain and coping style have been found to play an important role in an individual’s ability to live with chronic pain. Research indicates that the emotions of anxiety and anger that often accompany life with pain can actually increase inflammation in the body and amplify sensations of pain. Conversely, positive feelings of joy, hopefulness and relaxation can increase the body’s production of natural painkillers.

How I Can Help

Research has shown that the most effective treatment for chronic pain is a mind-body approach… in essence, addressing the psychological as well as physical aspects of pain. Therefore, to ensure that my clients get the best care, I have pursued extensive training in mind/body techniques and work in conjunction with primary-care physicians and specialists, physical therapists, psychiatrists and complimentary and alternative practitioners. I have also helped couples and families to better address the needs of everyone affected by an ongoing medical condition.

I will provide you with effective tools that you can use at home to diminish your pain and physical symptoms. Through our work together, you will be able to:

  • Understand thoughts that hurt, thoughts that help…thoughts that heal
  • Develop a positive attitude
  • Improve your sleep
  • Decrease your physical discomfort
  • Decrease your use of pain medication
  • Understand balance and pacing
  • Develop strong coping skills
  • Develop a viable self-care plan

Cognitive-behavioral interventions (CBT) have been shown to be highly effective in promoting positive cognitive and behavioral changes in individuals with chronic pain. These techniques are conducive to a shorter-term therapy or can be incorporated into long-term therapy. I effectively utilize:

  • Hypnosis
  • Imagery
  • Psychoneuroimmunology
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Relaxation Training
  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Stress Management
