Hypnosis

How I Use Hypnosis

I have successfully utilized hypnosis with my clients for many years and was certified in Clinical Hypnosis, by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis in 2001. Many of my clients find that including hypnosis as part of their longer-term psychotherapy to be very beneficial. I can also incorporate hypnosis into a brief psychotherapy focused on a specific issue.

Hypnosis can help you gain control over physical discomfort, anxiety and undesired behaviors, thoughts or emotions or cope better with a medical diagnoses. Hypnosis has been well researched. When conducted by a trained psychotherapist or physician, it is considered to be a safe and beneficial complimentary and alternative medical treatment.

I teach my clients to use self-hypnosis techniques during their psychotherapy sessions so that they can feel comfortable using this effective tool in between sessions as boosters and after therapy ends. To facilitate this, I make custom digital recordings for my clients that they may listen to whenever they choose.

How Hypnosis Works

You may have noticed that when you are away from your everyday life, perhaps sitting on the beach or somewhere else that’s calm and beautiful, that your active mind slows down, allowing you to begin to let go and relax. And…when you are in that relaxed state…things don’t seem as difficult…you become open to new ideas and insights. This is how hypnosis works.

Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation and focused attention. At the beginning of each hypnosis session, there is an opportunity to slow the over-active mind and relax your body. In this safe and comfortable state, it becomes possible to create significant changes. These changes can be both mental and physical.

If you would like an understanding of one way that self-hypnosis can be used to introduce relaxation, I have included a short hypnosis script. See the lake photograph below.

Lake Image for Hypnosis Script

Take a moment to just breathe and look at the picture of the lake. As you do, you might even begin to imagine how it would feel to be there sitting by this lake, surrounded by quiet and beauty. And, as you view the still water…the rich colors… the vastness of the forest, you may notice some subtle changes. Your breathing may deepen and slow and your mind might begin to calm. And just for a moment, you can put aside your concerns and allow yourself to feel more relaxed. When you are ready, return to what you were doing, taking this relaxed alertness with you.
